Selling Your Car For Junk? Here Are A Few Things You Will Want To Know

by Anthony Ortiz

That old car of yours has served its purpose, but now it is just taking up room in your driveway. With no one interested in buying the thing, there really are few options you have to get rid of it. One of the easiest ways to get rid of a car that is no longer functional and no longer of any use to you is to sell the car to a junkyard. If you have never junked a car before, you are bound to have a few questions. Take a quick peek at some of these common questions about junking a vehicle.

How much will you be paid for your car by a junkyard?

The price a junkyard is willing to offer you for your vehicle will vary from place to place. However, there are also a few other factors that will come into play when the junkyard determines a logical price for your vehicle, including:

  • the make and model of the car
  • how many good parts the car still has on it
  • the commonness of the car (rarer vehicles may bring a little more)
  • whether the car is still drivable

How do you get the car to the junkyard?

If the car is drivable, taking it to the junkyard yourself is a good option. This will be a good way for you to prove to the junkyard owner that the car is still operable, which may mean you get more money. Plus, some junkyards will charge you a fee to retrieve the vehicle that comes off the offered price they will pay for your car. If the car is inoperable, you can also have it hauled by a tow truck service to the junkyard.

What do you do about the car's registration once it is junked?

Keeping a car registered in your name will mean you have to pay registration, tagging, and local taxes on it every year. Therefore, when you sell a car for junk, it needs to be taken out of your name just the same as any other time you sell a car to another party. The buying junkyard will give you a slip of paper to take to the DMV that proves the car has been sold for junk. You will need to take this along with your license plate to the local DMV so the car can be taken out of your name and registered as salvaged in the system.
